Oliguria

Oliguria is a medical symptom that determines a drop in urine production. Oliguria is not a separate illness, but a pronounced sign of some other desease in the urinary system. This system plays a big role for the human body. The proper work if the urinary system provides for elimination of waste products and excess liquid from the body. Healthy kidneys normally produce about 1.5 liters of liquid within 24 hours. Oliguria involves significant reduction of urine formation up to only 400-500 ml a day. The disease is seen in both men and women regardless of age.

Sometimes, oliguria is confused with urinary difficulty, that occurs due to the human bladder dysfunction. In case of the urinary difficulty the bladder gets full, but the urination doesn’t happen, or happens with pain. Oliguria slows down filling of the bladder, and the urge to urinate doesn’t appear at all. If urine is not excreted from the human body properly, poisons may accumulate, which may lead to severe intoxication. Oliguria also leads to imbalance in the salt and water metabolism.

If a person experiences a decreased urine output, but doesn’t feel any discomfort, there can be natural reasons for that: drinking little water during the day and intense sweating. In this case, the low urine output is considered to be a norm.

What are the symptoms of oliguria? Most common of them are:

blood in the urine; high body temperature and fever; pain in the lower back; nausea and vomiting; diarrhea; edema; low artery pressure.

To eliminate the risk of oliguria the following preventive actions can be taken:

keep track of daily water consumption and excretion of urine (normally, approximately 80% of the consumed liquid is excreted with urine); observe the quality of the urine (color, smell).

Disturbances in the work of the urinary organs lead to urine stagnation and accumulation of liquid in the body. Urination disorder is a serious reason to make an appointment with a urologist, since the oliguria-causing diseases require an urgent treatment. To treat oliguria it is important to eliminate inflammations and infections that might have caused it. Any medicines should be taken only according to the doctor’s prescription. It is recommended to avoid alcohol and smoking when having oliguria.
